Legend says that the Marquis de Lafayette was wounded during the Battle
of the Brandywine and was brought to lie under this huge sycamore tree at his
headquarters. He recovered to fight another day. The Americans lost this
battle and retreated to Valley Forge for the winter. The British moved on to winter in the
comfort of Philadelphia.
