| This is one of the many DuPont mills built
along the Brandywine River between 1802 and 1850 to produce black powder. Built of granite
quarried on the site, the mills had three-foot thick walls on three sides. Toward the
river, the fourth wall was built of lightweight wood; the flimsy roof slanted toward the
river. These construction methods were safety precautions for in case of a lightening
strike or an accident, the resulting explosion would fire over the water causing the least
possible damage. "Graining Mill II" was included in a nationally juried art show at the Wayne Art Center in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Canvas Size: 16" x 20" $1,200 |
